The Sri Lankan lion, also known as the Ceylonese lion, is an extinct subspecies of lion that was native to Sri Lanka. It is believed to have also been present in several other parts of India as well.
Sri Lankan lions were known for their distinct physical characteristics. They had a long mane that extended down their neck and chest, along with a tuft of hair at the end of their tail. They were also smaller than other subspecies of lions, with males weighing around 180-200 kg and females weighing around 110-130 kg.
Unfortunately, the Sri Lankan lion became extinct in the wild around 1930 due to hunting and habitat loss. While some lions were kept in captivity and bred, there are no known purebred Sri Lankan lions alive today. However, there are ongoing efforts to reintroduce lions to Sri Lanka, including translocating African lions to the country.
